Abstract

Oral melanoma is the most common type of tumor in the oral cavity of dogs, and although surgery is the most recommended treatment, relapse is common, as the tumor can often not be completely excised. Adjuvant therapies such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy also do not guarantee prolonged survival because of the aggressiveness of this tumor. A study conducted at the Laboratory of Experimental and Comparative Oncology at FMVZ / USP found that canine melanomas express connexin 43 (TEIXEIRA et al., 2014). In partnership with the researcher Elizabeth S. Yeh, we will test the ACT1 peptide that has antitumor activity by mimicking the cytoplasmic domain of cx 43. Therefore, the ACT 1 peptide can be tested as a treatment in canine melanomas, and if it shows antitumor results, it will be a an advance of great importance for veterinary medicine, since this tumor does not have effective treatment.
