Abstract Introduction: The treatment of choice for maxillary constriction is the Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME). However, there are no three-dimensional studies describing the effects of RME in the midpalatal suture and in the craniofacial complex. Purpose: To three-dimensionally assess the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of the maxillary expander with differential opening and the fan-type expander in the mixed dentition. Material and Methods: A sample of 24 patients from 7 to 10 years old with transverse maxillary dental arch constriction was randomly allocated into two study groups: 12 individuals treated with the expander with differential opening (DEG) and 12 individuals treated with the fan-type expander (FEG). Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) exams were performed in the beginning of the treatment (T1) and 6 months after maxillary expansion (T2). Using the software ITK-SNAP and 3D-SLICER, segmentation and superimposition of T1 and T2 images at the cranial base will be performed. The three-dimensional displacement (X, Y and Z coordinates) of the maxilla, teeth, zygomatic bone and circum-maxillary sutures will be measured. Descriptive statistics will be used to describe the sample means, standard deviations and ranges. Intergroup comparisons will be performed using independent t tests. The intrarater reliability will be assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients and the Bland-Altman method. The significance level considered will be 5%. | |
