Learning difficulties and behavioral problems in Cycle I of Elementary School: contributions to the analysis of this relationship

Abstract

Learning disabilities can manifest as early as the first years of schooling and are often accompanied by emotional/behavioral problems. However, it is still not well established in the literature what the direction of the relationship between problems of behavior and difficulties in learning. Thus, the general objective of this research is to investigate the relations between behavioral problems and difficulties of students in Cycle I of Elementary School (EF). As specific objectives, it is intended to quantify and map learning difficulties and behavioral problems presented by the students during the EF, in addition to behavior of these variables according to the school series and the students' sex. The study will follow a descriptive, cross-sectional design. All parents and teachers of students from first to 5th year of a public school, chosen due its convenience, will be invited to participate in the survey. The information regarding the behavioral problems will be obtained from the Capacities and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ-Por), to be answered by the parents, while the learning difficulties will be evaluated by the teachers, who will respond to a questionnaire from the Brazilian version of the Social Skills Assessment System (SSRS-BR). The analysis of data will be done quantitatively, through the SPSS Program (Statistical Package for Social Sciences), by means of correlation analysis techniques, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and test t.
