Abstract

This project proposes the study of the relation between subject and history in Mémoires d'Outre Tombe, by Chateaubriand, through two intertwined work fronts: the first, emphasizing the consolidation of the role of the writer as the one in charge of giving voice to society's longings and of envisioning the future; and the second, paying attention to the memorialistic narrative as writing of the self, in its particularity of being in the boundary between the literary and the historical. It is thus our purpose to analyze how an individual trajectory which intends to represent the collective is constructed and what legitimates it as such. Therefore, it is imperative the investigation of the historical and literary background at the beginning of the 19th Century, of the reception of the literary work, of the historiographical debate and of subjects near to the Romanticism, literary trend of which Chateaubriand is considered precursor, such as the concept of genius, the effects of the revolution and the melancholy.
