Abstract

Several neurological diseases can lead to functional and morphological changes in the urinary bladder, such as increased collagen deposition in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the detrusor layer. Increased collagen deposition is associated to loss of bladder compliance and may lead to storage and emptying bladder dysfunctions. As well as in other organs, in the urinary bladder, collagen deposition depends on an equilibrated interaction of proteolytic enzymes, including metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their endogenous tissue inhibitors (TIMPs). The phenomenon of collagen deposition and its inter-relationships with MMPs and TIMPs are unknown in the neurogenic bladder. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the gene expression of type I and III collagens, MMPs and TIMPs in patients with neurogenic bladder.
