Abstract

When the solar wind interacts with the planetary obstacles, it defines a region called planetary magnetosphere. In planets which do not have an active magnetic field, as Mars, they are called induced magnetospheres, since they are formed due to the interaction of the solar wind plasma with the planet s ionosphere plasma. Altough Mars does not have currently a global magnetic field, its crustal magnetization is quite intense and must be considered in the studies of plasma processes in its magnetosphere. Therefore, for a better understanding of the Martian magnetic field, its magnetosphere and its atmosphere evolution, it is necessary to better understand the influence of the Martian crustal magnetic field over the system and its interaction with the solar wind. This project has as its main topics of interest the study of the crustal magnetic field displacement in the planet s terminator region as a function of the solar zenith angle (SZA). To achieve this, the data provided by three space missions to Mars (MGS, MAVEN and MEX) will be used. Observed magnetic field will be compared with a Mars crustal magnetic field model. Variations between the observed and the modeled magnetic fields will be studied as function of solar wind conditions and SZA. (AU)
