Abstract

The goal of this Project is to evaluate the application of a new signal cryptography technique to optical communication systems. The technique is based on the use of digital signal processing algorithms: I) to split two input baseband signals, signal 1 and signal 2, in several spectral slices, II) to apply different phase shifts and delays to these slices, III) to shuffle some of the slices of signals 1 and 2, IV) to spectrally multiplex the slices of shuffled signals V) to generate an encrypted baseband signal that is a distorted version of the input one. The cryptographic key is the spectral position of the shuffled slices and the set of all deployed phase shifts and delays. The encrypted baseband signals modulate optical carriers and are then propagated by a transparent optical network. The two shuffled signals, which convey information of part of each of the input signals, may travel through different optical routes. Thus, an eavesdropper interested on the content of only one of these signals will need to monitor both scrambled signals and properly process them to discover the used key. The complexity and the cost of these procedures may inhibit the work of such intruders. On the other hand, compensating the diverse physical impairments experienced by the signals that travel through different paths pose a new challenge for detecting and decrypting the signals at the authorized receiver side. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that this technique is investigated. In this proposal we will use Matlab codes to employ the technique. Its performance will be evaluated by numerical simulations carried out by VPITransmissionMaker. This proposal is related to the participation of our team in the "National Science and Technology Institutes: Program Fotonicom 2 Programa Fotonicom 2" organized by CNPq.
