Abstract

The Santos Basin has economic interest due to the growing demand for exploration of marine resources. However, certain portions of it still have unknown geological features due to lack of studies. The basement of the Santos Basin, in the Continental Shelf in front of the city of Santos (SP), should be the Ribeira Fold Belt in its central and southern portion. From the geological maps available it seems to have continuity of the geological units of these two areas. The term "seems" reflects the interruption of the geological units by the coastline observed in the geological maps of the Ribeira Fold Belt. It is characterized by units with a structural tendency in the NE-SW direction, separated by some faults in the same direction. Aerial surveys on the continental portion of the Ribeira belt show that juxtaposed terrains have magnetic variations. Thus, an acquisition of marine magnetometric data was planned on 21 through 24 January 2018 aboard the Alpha Crucis Ship. Two magnetic profiles were acquired, one going up to the edge of the Continental Slope and another on the return to Santos Beach arranged along the NW-SE direction, approximately 200 km long. The main objective of this project is to investigate if the Ribeira Fold Belt can be the basement of the Santos Basin in this area. The range presents distinct geological terrain and the marine magnetometric profiles are parallel to the orientation of the fold. This is the ideal situation to verify if the Ribeira Range is the basement in the area how much it was stretched during the Atlantic opening.
