Abstract

This work aims to understand the ritual of animal sacrifice from the perspective of artisans who produced attic pottery in the 5th century BC, by means the way they pictured animals. It is known that the bibliography separates the scenes of ceramic figurations of the ritual in three distinct phases ("pre-killing", "the killing" and "post-killing"), then focus is given "pre-killing's" phase, in which live animals are figured in context of ritual. What motivates this research is the fact that the bibliography is not consistent regarding the choice of animals, as well as the way they were figured by the artisans of the Attic region. In this way, analyzes will be made of the animals chosen by the artisans regarding how they were figured and how they interacted with the other elements pictured in the scenes by these artisans, to finally understand this perspective related to this type of worship.
