Abstract

This research aims to study how the feminine is constructed in the characters of the English author Angela Carter's novel, The Passion of New Eve (1977) translated by Rocco Publisher as A Paixão da Nova Eva (1987). Such study will be made by using concepts of the feminist critique in order to better understand specific issues of the literature written by female writers like "A crítica feminista no território selvagem" (1994) by Elaine Showalter; as well as books and articles about gender theories as Problemas de gênero - feminismo e subversão da identidade (2017) by Judith Butler and O Segundo sexo (1970) by Simone de Beauvoir, for example. The main goal is to reflect upon what the novel tells us about what constitutes the feminine identity - what actually means to be a woman - and how the construction of the feminine in the characters of the novel shows us that. Highlighting what effects and implications it has in society and how people, especially women, are affected by it. In short, how the novel approaches the oppressions suffered by women because of the differences between genders.
