Abstract

Studies on the zooplankton communities may contribute to a better understanding of zooplankton interrelations with the environment, and serve as a basis for estimating the productivity of estuarine environments. The purpose of this study is to determine the composition, abundance and temporal distribution of the mesozooplankton community of the Valo Grande channel, an estuarine region of Ribeira de Iguape River, Iguape, SP. The plankton samples were obtained during the project "Diversity and spatial-temporal distribution of caridean prawns larvae and adults in the lower basin of the Ribeira de Iguape River (SP)" with financial support of FAPESP (# 2013/06457-2) from June/14 to July/15. Samples collected in the Valo Grande channel will be used, comprising three parallel points in the river (left, right and middle). The horizontal trawls were carried out for 10 min on the subsurface of the water column during the period of the full ebb tide, with a conical plankton network (1 m in length, 0.50 m diameter, 250 ¼m mesh) with a flowmeter coupled in the center of the mouth. In addition, monthly abiotic factors of the bottom and surface water were recorded. For the identification and counting of mesozooplankton, 5-ml subsamples, without replacement, will be analyzed until a total of 30 individuals of each taxon. Subsequently, the total density of each taxon in the sample (individuals.m3) will be estimated as a function of the total filtered water. The frequency of occurrence, richness, diversity, and equity of the taxa present in the plankton will be analyzed, as well as multivariate analyzes for the mesozooplankton community characterization.
