Effects of oral decontamination with a mechanical brush equipped with simultaneous suction in patients under intensive care

Abstract

Introduction: Inpatients in intensive care units (ICUs) become susceptible to respiratory infections due to their level of consciousness not to favor the cough reflex and poor sanitation capacity. With this, there is a need to review the methods of oral hygiene used, instituting more efficient methods to reduce the rate of respiratory infection. Objective: To evaluate the effects of oral decontamination with a mechanical brush equipped with simultaneous suctioning in the incidence rate of pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy and use of enteral catheter in patients under intensive care. Material and Method: This project will be carried out in the General ICU of the Regional Hospital of Presidente Prudente. It will include all individuals who were hospitalized at the ICU with a stay of at least 48 hours, over six months. The CPOD, Community Periodontal, Soft Tissue Alteration, Lingual Tissue, Oral Hygiene for Critical Patients, and Respiratory Infection will be evaluated. Patients will be randomly divided into two groups: Control - oral hygiene with conventional toothbrushes; Test - brushing with toothbrushes equipped with simultaneous suction system. Form of Analysis of the Results: The data collected will be tabulated first and subjected to an exploratory analysis and later the appropriate statistical tests will be applied. Expected Results: It is expected that the use of mechanical brushing equipped with simultaneous suctioning may make the oral hygiene process in ICUs more efficient, contributing to a significant reduction in the rate of respiratory infection, which will allow the elaboration of prevention strategies in the ICUs .
