Abstract

The aim of this project is to be inserted in the search for solutions for the even rising energy challenge that our society faces in this century. Driven by climatic changes, originated by the fossil fuel burn, clean energy sources research have become a top priority. Lithium ion batteries are predominant when it comes to portable devices, as well as in the hybrid cars, however scarcity in this metal resources around the world makes the search for a replacer necessary. Even though sodium ion presents energetic limitations this metal is much more available than lithium, besides it is possible to use aluminum as a current collector which reduces the battery production cost, this all makes the sodium ion batteries desirable for stationary application. The low operating voltage of the positive materials is one of the aspects that prevent these batteries implementation; however fluorophosphates polyanionic matrices present themselves as possible solutions to this problem. Due to sodium ion dimensions graphite is not suitable for negative materials in these batteries, nevertheless materials such as graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide have been shown able to replace it. The study of new materials based on fluorophosphates and reduced graphene oxide to be used as positive and negative materials, respectively, in sodium ion batteries is here proposed. (AU)
