Micro-computed tomography study of the effects of different protocols of biomechanical preparation on the internal and external anatomy of mandibular premolars with radicular grooves

Abstract

The aim of the present study will be to evaluate the changes in the internal morphology of the root canal system and the dentinal thickness in mandibular premolars with presence of radicular grooves after different biomechanical preparation protocols using micro-computed tomography. For this, 20 mandibular premolars with radicular grooves and presence of two canals will be selected by micro-computed tomography scanning. Afterwards, the composition of the experimental groups will be performed by means of stratified sampling according to the internal morphology, volume and surface area of the canals and depth of the groove. Thus, the specimens will be divided into two homogeneous groups according to the biomechanical preparation protocol (n=10): Protaper Next (PTN) and XP-Endo Shaper (XPS). After the biomechanical preparation, the specimens will be submitted to a new micro-computed tomography scanning and quantitatively evaluated for the changes of three-dimensional parameters (volume, surface area and Structure Model Index), two-dimensional (area and perimeter) and percentage of canals walls touched. In addition, for qualitative evaluation, the three-dimensional models of the root canal system and the color-coded dentin will be obtained according to the thickness of its structure before and after the preparation. Quantitative data will be expressed as mean values and standard deviations. Considering the normal distribution of results, the T test for independent samples will be applied for comparison between groups.
