Abstract

This research through the BEPE (Research Internships Abroad) is nexus to the ongoing master's project "Civil cases involving slaves and freedmen in the city of São Paulo, 1722-1797" (Number: 2017/05656-2 ) that tabulates and analyzes civil suits and petitions that deal with daily issues, debts collections, requests for freedom and attempts to re-enslavement in the city of São Paulo. From these documents the investigation analyzes the judicial functioning, the legal culture, as well as the social incorporation of the slaves and freedmen. Considering some results and the perspective on the legal culture from the Africans and their descendants, it became necessary to research the archives and libraries to consult legal doctrines that were used to legitimize some requests for freedom and re-enslavement, as well as certain judicial procedures. In addition, it is sought to consult specialized bibliography on History of Portuguese and Brazilian colonial. The expectation is that this consultation will contribute crucially to the analyzes in historical, legal and theoretical perceptions about the documents of the research in development. (AU)
