Abstract

The use of agrochemicals has been increasing gradually over the years to meet the growing market demand for food. This has generated environmental impacts that compromise the sustainability of distinct ecosystems, especially aquatic ecosystems. To evaluate these damages are used ecotoxicology tests with a range of Filos and classes of animals. However, the recommended precepts for Toxicology of the 21st century aim to meet the 3 R's principle of animal experimentation: "Replace", "Reduction" and "Refinement". In this line of thought, there is a recommendation for the decreasing use of complex organisms in ecotoxicology bioassays. The objective of this project is to evaluate the toxic effects and teratogenic potential of the herbicide 2,4-D (DMA) on the embryo development of the bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus). Therefore, after the preliminary tests, it is intended to determine the median lethal concentration (LC50-96h) of the herbicide, to verify the toxic and teratogenic potential of this chemical for the embryos of L. catesbeianus using the FETAX bioassay, to investigate whether the FETAX bioassay is a representative test of the damage caused by the herbicide 2,4 D (DMA) to the embryos presenting a positive correlation in the dose-response effect and to evaluate zootechnical indexes and health aspects of the surviving tadpoles.
