Abstract

Following the group of interpreters that emphasizes more the theoretical contribution than the methodological contribution of the English School to the study of international relations, the present project of research aims mainly to investigate two questions: firstly, what importance for this school of the concept of "balance of power", especially in two works, Power politics (1946; revised and expanded in 1978) by Martin Wight, the school's principal founder, and The anarchical society (1977) by Hedley Bull, the main student of Wight; and (2) secondly, what relationship can be established between the concept of "balance of power" in Wight and the concept of "balance of power" in Bull. The academic importance renewed by this theoretical school in the 1980s, and the general importance of the theory of international relations justifies the undertaking of this research project.(AU)
