Abstract

The riparian forests are very important for structure and performance of head streams, acting as a complex environment which can be considered a singular riparian ecosystem. Previous studies verified that riparian forests characterized by wide strip and conserved vegetation can indicate a stream with high level of integrity and better quality of water. The aim of this proposal is to study the diversity of parasites associated with amphibians that transit through six riparian ecosystems (fragments of riparian forests with head streams) which present different levels of integrity from North of Paraná State. We will evaluate if parasite fauna reflects the integrity of these ecosystems, testing the following hypothesis: integrated environments present high diversity, low abundance and a great proportion of parasite species with complex life cycle. These parameters can provide data on habitat integrity even before that some damage be detected in amphibians' populations, as well as qualify the potential of parasite fauna of amphibians as an indicator of integrity for the whole ecosystem. In this way, the novelty of this proposal is verify if variations of riparian vegetation features, as width and integrity of forest, influence the parasite fauna of amphibians, as well as to suggest the combined use of these knowledges on conservation initiatives.
