Abstract

Luminescence is the light emission after the excitation of atoms, ions, molecules or materials. The conformation of these materials has a direct impact on its cost and applicability and currently there is a search for new conformations of luminescent materials for application in several devices. Polyoxometalates of lanthanide ions (LnPOM) are a promising materials class, because in addition to the specific luminescent properties of lanthanide ions, these compounds can be prepared from simple synthetic routes of low cost and in different conformations, as in two-dimensional molecular films. Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett luminescent films of LnPOM have potential application in optoelectronic devices, since they unite the spectroscopic properties of the polyoxometalate with desirable characteristics of the self-organized molecular film conformation, which include transparency and control of the organization and thickness of the film. Besides, there is the possibility of new spectroscopic properties resulting from the two-dimensional conformation. In this context, the aims of this project is to functionalize the LnPOM decatungstoeuropate [Eu(W5O18)2]9- with the cationic surfactant dimethyldioctadecylammonium (DODA)+ and to study the luminescent properties of the functionalized compound (DODA)9[Eu(W5O18)2] in the solid state and conformed in the Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films. In relation to the study of the luminescent properties of the molecular films, these will also be investigated in situ during the preparation of the films, correlating the luminescence of these systems with their degree of organization.
