Abstract

The insertion of recycled materials for paving is, in fact, a fundamental practice when aiming a more sustainable and economic development in the road sector. The use of RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) is still uncommon in Brazil, especially in asphalt overlay, when compared to European countries and the United States, which have applied increasing proportions of this material to their asphalt mixtures. Nonetheless, not enough is known about the actual interaction between the aged asphalt binder presented in the RAP and the new binder applied into the recycled asphalt mixtures. The aim of this research is to understand the mechanism of this interaction in order to establish a laboratory method of extraction and recovery of the binder present in recycled mixtures and verify, with rheological and chemical tests, the amount of oxidized binder present in RAP which is activated during the production of the mixture and interacts with the new binder added. This is one of the main uncertainties regarding the use of RAP, and may cause variability in the performance of recycled asphalt mixtures. (AU)
