Abstract

The Social-Ecological System framework has been applied to environmental management and been shown to provide information which is crucial to understand and discuss the resilience of such systems. Characterizing and managing coastal environments, like sandy beaches, as sociology-ecological systems may result in management practices that can overcome the many obstacles to its sustainability, in face of current threats that affect such systems, their resources, and the well being of coastal communities. For this, it is necessary to identify the main characteristics of the social-ecological system that affect its capacity to change, by scaling down the socio-ecological system framework. The original Post-doc project aims to analyze beach management trends in Brazil considering the application of ecosystem-based management framework and the potential or failure to maintain beaches' multiple benefits. This proposal for internship aims to bring new elements to the discussion, amplifying the potential to discuss better management practices by providing new information related to an increased characterization of sandy beaches as socio-ecological systems, including the qualitative analysis of the beach management network in Brazil. Thus, increasing the benefits and the impact of the outcomes of the original research to coastal management. (AU)
