Abstract

The Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy is applied in the aeronautical industry in fan blades and disks of the first stage of gas turbine engines in the temperature range from 250 to 450°C. Although the alloy has high specific mechanical strength and good stability at temperatures up to 600°C, the material has a high friction coefficient, low wear resistance, and reduced high-temperature oxidation resistance. CrN is a hard coating with good wear, corrosion, and oxidation resistance, while metallic Cr has ductile behavior, which hinders the propagation of cracks nucleated at the brittle layers of CrN in Cr/CrN based coatings. In the present work, the fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V with lamellar microstructure and a nanostructured Cr/CrN multilayer coating will be evaluated through fatigue and the combination of fatigue and creep loadings (dwell effect) tests at room temperature and in the application temperature range. The mechanisms involved in the fatigue behavior of the alloy under operating conditions will be studied under the perspective of superficial changes provided by the presence of a multilayer Cr/CrN coating, alloy application temperature influence on time-dependent phenomena, and the combination of dynamic and constant loadings, based on microstructural analysis, oxidation tests, residual stress measurements, crack propagation tests, strain analysis, and fracture surface analysis. The fatigue cracks propagation stages will be evaluated through the crack propagation rate as a function of the variation of the stress intensity factor. It is expected that the treatment will provide superficial changes that improve the fatigue behavior of the alloy in operating conditions, aiming the application of the surface treatment in the first stage of jet engines components and the expansion of the possibilities of the alloy application in the aeronautical sector.
