Abstract

In this project the behavior of lignin, a macromolecule of vegetable origin and abundant, as a photoprotective material in paint formulations will be studied. Kraft lignin and hydrolytic lignin (lignins with higher availability on the market) will be used in combination with water-based dyes. These mixtures will be subjected to physical and chemical rotting, through irradiation with a germicidal UV lamp and a weathering chamber, so that accelerated "aging" occurs. The results will be analyzed by UV-visible and infrared spectrophotometry, in order to investigate the influence of photoprotective properties of lignin on the reduction of dye photodegradation. In addition to its photoprotective nature, lignin is a renewable macromolecule, which gives a more sustainable character to the paints.
