Abstract

This research project aims to investigate an important topic in Platos philosophy, namely to study the criticism of the Doctrine of Forms as exposed in Plato's dialogue Parmenides. There are four topics (or problems) to be examined: (a) the problem of the range of Ideas; (b) the very notion of participation; (c) the thesis on there being only one Idea for each well-formed group of sensible things, in terms of the claims of (I) hen epipollôn (one-over-many), (II) non-identity, and (III) separation /self-predication/self-exhibition; and finally the issue on the relations between the two worlds as illustrated by the example of Master and Slave.
