Effects of cover crops and nitrogen rates on sucrose syntase activity, cellulose content and cotton fiber quality

Abstract

An enzymatic activity on cotton leaves influences cellulose formation in the fibers and a sucrose synthase enzyme (SuSy) acts on the formation and degradation of sucrose. The objective will be to evaluate sucrose synthase activity and cellulose content in cotton fibers grown on the palette of black mucuna membranes and uroclo ruziziensis with or without inoculation and nitrogen doses. The design will be randomized blocks with five replications in a split plot scheme. In the plots cover plants were allocated: 1- Mucuna (M); 2- Fallow (F); 3- Ruzigrass + Azospirillum (R+A); 4- Ruzigrass + Mucuna; 5- Ruzigrass + Azospirillum + Mucuna (R+A+M) e 6- Ruzigrass; in the subplots the N rates: 80 and 120 kg ha-1 (urea). Sucrose synthase (Susy) activity in the leaves and the cellulose content of the fibers are applied to the leaves opposite the fruit and to the fruits of the lowland, middle third and bridge of the plant at 15 and 30 DAA (days after anthesis), respectively. The cellulose content of the fibers will be evaluated at harvest. As technological characteristics of fiber as micronaire, strength, length, short fiber index and maturity of the fiber used. The statistical study comprises the analysis of variance and the means of the experimental tests will be compared to the Tukey test at a minimum level of 5% probability. (AU)
