Effect of two yeast strains inclusion on the productive performance of piglets challenged with E. coli k88+ in the nursery phase

Abstract

The necessity for the replacement of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal production made the probiotics, among them yeasts, appear as one of the main alternatives. However, further studies on its real benefits and mechanisms of action are needed to better elucidate them. This study aims to evaluate the effect of two strains of yeasts on the productive performance of piglets challenged with Escherichia coli strain K88+. For this, 192 weaned piglets will be divided into four groups (T1 - without challenge and without yeast, T4 - only with challenge, and another two T2 and T3 with challenge and yeast - changing only the yeast strain). The animals will be housed in the weaned piglets' facilities, each pen will house 4 animals (12 pens per treatment), and they'll be weighted at arrival, seven, 11, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days of experiment. Daily provided and wasted feed will be measured to help evaluate the daily growth and economical parameters. 144 piglets will be slaughtered in total, 48 in each day, at the 11, 28 and 42 days of experiment. During the slaughter blood and jejunum samples will be collected. The variables analyzed will be performance, intestinal morphometry, blood test and composition of the intestinal flora. (AU)
