Abstract

Hybrid CNC machines, which perform additive and substrate manufacturing, have as part of their process the deposition of metallic powder. The powder is melted through an interaction with a thermal source (laser) at the base of the substrate and the adjacent layers, layer by layer. The height of the deposited layer is a factor resulting from the combination of deposition parameters e.g. laser power, advance speed, focal length, powder flow. The variability in the depositional layer implies loss of dimensions of the part, which is seen as a discontinuity and a potential failure. Thus, the present project aims to develop monitoring techniques capable of detecting flaws in the construction of the layer. In this way, it is intended to provide for several discontinuities that may exist in the final piece and as a future proposal, to allow the adjustment of process parameters dynamically.
