Abstract

High Impedance Faults (HIFs) researches in distribution systems attract the interest of companies and researchers worldwide. The HIFs can cause damage to medium voltage network equipments and risk to people and animals, what motivates the search for new protection techniques and devices. The random behavior and the small magnitude of the HIFs current makes the identification difficult by traditional protection methods, and therefore there is no fully efficient solution for the detection. HIFs can occur from the rupture of an energized conductor and subsequent ground touch on each side of the conductor, whether concomitantly or not. In this sense, it is intended to contribute to this matter by performing a characterization of HIFs resulting from the three types of conductor rupture mentioned above, considering the presence of Distributed Generation (DG). For this purpose, voltage and current signals will be monitored on the three phase and neutral of the substation transformer. Therefore, it will be used the Stockwell Transform (ST) to have the HIF characterization in terms of the associated signals behavior in the frequency and time domain. Thus, it is aimed to contribute to the study progress of this kind of fault and to the development of protection devices applied to electrical distribution systems. It is important to highlight that the activities of this project will be based on studies already developed by the proponent's research group.
