Abstract

Peanut seeds are difficult to produce because they generally have an unsatisfactory percentage of germination (below 70%) and low vigor. The seeds can be attacked by different pathogens, but mainly fungi, and they are very sensitive to mechanical injuries. As peanut seeds are nutritionally important as a source of vitamins and with great potential for biodiesel production, the development of fast, accurate and applicable techniques to analyze the quality of seeds can contribute to the decision-making process in the agricultural industry. Analytical techniques such as magnetic resonance and multispectral imaging offer reliable alternatives to assess physiological disorders, incidence of pathogens and mechanical damage. The main objective of this project is the development of routine analysis methods for peanut seeds using patters of magnetic resonance and multispectral images, which will help in the discrimination of samples for standardized imaging protocols. In parallel, analyzes of X-ray imaging, germination and vigor will be performed to verify the relationship with the new protocols and to improve other protocols already used for seed analysis. We expect to develop routine analysis methods that allow the use of magnetic resonance and multispectral imaging for peanut analysis in addition to identifying physical and physiological changes that occur in the seeds.
