Abstract

The purpose of this project is to conduct a study about the implications of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPA) and their derivatives (oxy- and nitro-HPA) present in the atmosphere of São Carlos city on human health. This study is of paramount importance since the atmosphere in this region is being altered by the mechanization of the sugarcane harvesting process and the increase in industrial activities. The HPA and its derivatives, which are mutagenic and carcinogenic, will be identified and quantified in the atmospheric particulate material. This will allow a better understanding of the behavior of HPA and its derivatives in the atmosphere, as well as defining the sources of emissions. These data will be correlated with numbers and causes of hospitalizations and deaths in the region, which will provide important information on how health is affected by these atmospheric constituents.
