Abstract

In the transition from the 13th to the 14th century, in a period of effervescence of a more regular pastoral policy in the dioceses of the Crown of Castile, different catechetical productions appeared in order to admonish not only clergy, but also lay people from Christian families or recently converted to Christianity. In this context, the converted Jew Alfonso de Valladolid produced a set of pastoral pamphlets in which he spoke, among other sins, about that of blasphemy. With an emphasis on the works of this author, this study will examine to what extent the condemnation of this sin of the tongue contributed to the naturalization of a model of behavior followed by converts. In addition, this Scientific Initiation research will seek to analyze how the sins of the language were related by the author to the verbal expressions of the Devil himself on earth.
