Abstract

In a context in which different Catholic kingdoms adopted the guidelines established by the IV Lateran Council (1215) about the institutionalization of auricular confession and a pastoral focused on the formation of the faithful, teachings on the sacrament of Matrimony, among other rules and doctrines, began to be gradually disseminated by the action of confessors and preachers. Reinforcing these directions, in the mid-13th century, the Catalan Dominican Ramón Martí wrote the booklet "De Seta Machometi", in which warnings about Muslim matrimonial practices occupy a prominent position. The objective of this research is to examine how the work of Ramón Martí is part of a pastoral movement to reaffirm Christian doctrine and invigorate preaching that took shape and consistency during the 13th century in the Iberian Peninsula. More precisely, the aim is to examine the role that De Seta Machometi played in the training of preachers and in the elaboration of works of Islamic polemics. It is also the objective of this research to catalog the main Christian rudiments offered in this booklet and the main criticisms directed at Muslim customs. The purpose is, therefore, to identify the Islamic practices that were denounced by preachers and the model of married life prescribed to infidels and newly converted. (AU)
