Abstract

Quotas for black students are one of the most frequent affirmative actions adopted in the last decade to guarantee the inclusion of students from traditionally excluded groups in public higher education. Considering the position of black people in Brazilian society, historically associated to a broad array of disadvantages, several studies have shown that racial quotas to university admission have led to a social advantage. At the beginning, to use the quotas, students had to self-declare them as black. Currently, commissions of hetero-identification are used to validate this self-declaration. This research intends to examine if the access to this social benefit, especially if the change to these validation procedures of racial declaration, interfere in any way on the perception of these students' racial belonging. To do so, we use the sociology of socialization and sociology of racial relations to explore the experiences of a group of youngsters admitted through the program of quotas for black students at Unicamp in 2020 e 2021.
