Abstract

Municipal Solid Waste Management in Brazil is still unsatisfactory when it comes to valorization of recyclable materials, because in 2018 only 17% of Brazilian population (35 million of citizens) had access to selective collection (CEMPRE, 2018). Furthermore, there are only 70 units of composting plants around the country (BRASIL, 2019b). Thus, materials with potential to reutilization and recycling are probably been disposed in sanitary landfills, controlled landfill and open dumps. Therefore, an option to recovery solid waste that was disposed properly or improperly in landfills is landfill mining that consists in excavating solid waste from an active landfill or a closed landfill to recovery materials for energy recovery (Waste-to-energy) or materials to be used in the landfill itself (soil, for example). This research aims to characterize urban solid waste from Campinas/SP with 13 years of storage to determine its potential use in agricultural and energy generation. So, analysis of gravimetric composition of landfilled municipal solid waste, moisture content, total solids, fixed solids, volatile solids, protein content, carbohydrate content, lipid content, elemental composition (C, H and N) and caloric value are proposed to evaluate potential use of stored solid waste in landfill to generate energy or to be reused as material. It is expected to obtain results that contribute to assessment of technical, economic and environmental feasibility of landfill mining in Campinas/SP. (AU)
