Abstract

The aim of this project is to identify the effects of imports of Chinese products and Brazilian exports to China on the birthweight of Brazilian children. Previous studies have shown that international trade with China affects the labor market significantly in several countries, including Brazil. Imports have negative effects on wages and exports, mainly of commodities, have a positive effect. We intend to explore differences at the micro-regional level depending on the relative participation of the local workforce in each exporting and importing sector. We will assess the impact of this trade on the birthweight of children, following the literature that shows the adverse effects of shocks on family income during pregnancy on birth conditions.
