Abstract

A cirrhotic liver is deficient in several physiological processes in the body, such as the important damage to the immune system, mainly due to the failure of the reticuloendothelial system. The development of immune dysfunction associated with cirrhosis corresponds to a systemic inflammation, which causes an important immunodeficiency state in these patients. Another physiological process affected in cirrhotic patients is excretion, which results in the accumulation of toxic nitrogenous components, which can potentiate systemic inflammation and contribute to viral latency. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the viral load present in these patients, and its relationship with the clinical picture of cirrhosis, in order to understand the relationship between the incidence of viral infection and the state of immunosuppression in these patients.
