Abstract

This work aims to bring together two critics who wrote works on the formation of Brazilian literature. Therefore, we seek to analyze the influence and points of view arising from the History of Brazilian Literature (1916), by José Veríssimo (1857-1916), adopted by Isaac Goldberg (1887-1938) when writing his panorama entitled Brazilian Literature (1922). Following the ideas of Veríssimo, the North American critic projects a process of cultural independence that begins with nativism, from pre-romantic works, turns into Indianism, already in the first romantic phase, into nationalism, and culminates in the universalism of Machado de Assis (1839-1908). According to Veríssimo, our nativism, observed since Gabriel Soares de Sousa (1540-1591), manifested in the book Descriptive Treaty of Brazil (1587), already demonstrates the main ramifications of literary independence, demonstrating a feeling of love for the country, and reasons for taking off from Portugal. This perspective will also be adopted by Issac Goldberg and will serve as a support point for the presentation of Brazilian literature to an English-speaking audience. (AU)
