Abstract

This master's thesis project aims to analyze different uses of the term "revolution" and its cognates by different Chinese social actors in their narrations, interpretations and evaluations of the Cultural Revolution that took place in China between 1966 and 1969. The proposed research intends to examine the different meanings that these actors attributed to this term and its cognates, the temporalities that these meanings assumed and helped to produce, and the possible political effects of these semantic practices to legitimize, accept, or contest the Maoist regime. The methodology used will consist of the interpretation and analysis of books, political speeches, visual images and testimonies of various social agents, whether politically mobilized or not, who present different political views on the Cultural Revolution. The project is inserted in the field of anthropology of time and history, and seeks to discuss in an empirical case the relationship between temporality, historical narratives, and political power.
