Abstract

The evolution of tool wear in machining processes is commonly described by a curve divided into three main regions: (I) accelerated initial wear, (II) constant stable wear and (III) accelerated final wear at high levels. The loss of tool material in the first region causes a change in its geometry, adapting it to the tribological system and for the second region of the curve, increasing the total wear level. Aiming at reducing this level and extend tool life, this project proposes to characterize this new geometry, in order to prepare tribologically adapted cutting tools for turning Ti-15Mo alloy, a difficult-to-cut material, for which process improvements that allow greater productivity are critical. Thus, the work has the goal of determining the performance of cutting inserts with a geometry adapted to increase tool life, avoiding the first transient region of the wear curve.(AU)
