Abstract

Staphylococcus pseudointermedius is the most frequent species related to pyoderma in dogs. Methicillin-resistant S. pseudointermedius (MRSP) and clindamycin-resistant staphylococci (MLS) are widespread worldwide, and prevalence varies across different geographical locations, veterinary practices, and study populations. This study aimed the identification of S. pseudintermedius genes conferring resistance to the first-line antimicrobials recommended for systemic therapy of pyoderma in dogs by the development of a Point-of-Care (PoC) testing. In the first phase of the project will be developed and validated the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) under laboratory conditions, and in the second phase will be performed the evaluation of the LAMP assay as a PoC test by a clinical trial. Whereas, lincosamides, first-generations of cephalosporins, and amoxicillin-clavulanate are recommended as first empirical choices for systemic and topical treatment, the development of a PoC testing for detection of MRSP and MLS could provide more rapid clinical decision making and more appropriate treatments and interventions, reducing the use of empirical treatments and the emergency of resistant strains.
