Abstract

This research project proposes the study of the Railway Engineering's french bibliography on 19th century - in the form of courses, treatises and manuals - and its use by the polytechnic schools of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. This proposal is justified not only by the absence of studies about the subject, but also by being able to bring to light a part of the history of Engineering as a scientific field. It starts from the hypothesis that these works arrived in Brazil through the polytechnic schools even though they didn't have a primordial function focused on teaching and, indirectly, they based the national railway construction practices. The main objective is to investigate the relationship between the French railway bibliography of the 19th century and the teaching of Engineering at the polytechnic schools of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, looking for the main works used for teaching, which engineers alumni built railway buildings and if these buildings meet the constructive suggestions present in the French works. The methodological procedure adopted is of an exploratory qualitative nature, using bibliographic and documentary research as a source for data collection. At the end of the research, it is expected to compose a theoretical discussion about the French railway bibliography, to show the application of its constructive practices in some Brazilian buildings, as well as to explain the reasons for its use.
