Abstract

Active teaching strategies have gained great popularity in the academic environment in recent years. Its use is a direct response to the difficulties faced by traditional education while aiming to be a more efficient method resulting in more engaged and qualified professionals. Those new methodologies seek to promote more in-depth knowledge and long-term retention by involving the student more in its learning process. Among those strategies, there are the more recent Challenge, Discussion, and Conclusion, or D2R; and Simulation, which consists of applying the necessary knowledge in a model to better understand it. This study aims to compare these two methods in the lecture on enzymatic kinetics. There will be included 60 students, randomized between two groups: a control group, which will attend the lecture done by the D2R strategy already in use by the faculty; and an intervention group which will have the simulation method. Both classes will be taught by the same professor. The groups will have access to the same pre-class material and will complete an individual test to assess what they learned from it. Overall class duration and number of inquiries by students to clear up doubts will be measured. Students then will complete a qualitative survey of their perception of their own learning and the teaching method applied. After fifteen days, both groups will complete a test consisting of multiple-choice questions, prepared by a different professor without links to who originally taught the lessons. Students' performance in both tests will be described and analyzed statistically, whereas the qualitative survey will be presented in bar and pie charts along with a listing of their personal impressions.(AU)
