Abstract Cybersecurity is an important issue when the world is undergoing a digital transformation (also accelerated by COVID-19), meaning that we increasingly have the presence of connected devices (Internet of Things---IoT), whose main point of innovation is innovation is software-centric. In this context, attackers exploit vulnerabilities to gain access to these devices and thus act maliciously. Therefore, it is important to promote protection mechanisms that mitigate or even extinguish cyber attacks. Many recent initiatives bring low-cost computing solutions in order to increase the security of IoT devices. However, the proposal of a firewall mechanism for IoT is addressed in a dispersed way in the literature, or they deal with the problem of packet filtering partially, refraining from the combination of factors such as low computational consumption, the possibility of generalization of rules, execution of advanced algorithms for filtering packets, updating of security policies via the network. Thus, the present proposal fills that gap and, as part of a larger project, provides evidence of the feasibility of its execution. The expected results consist of implementing a firewall for the Lightweight IP (lwIP) library implemented in the Espressif ESP32 development kit. | |
