Abstract

This project seeks to study the work of writer Jorge Amado in France, where he remained in exile between 1948 and 1949, participating in Parisian communist circles and collaborating with the local press. For this, it is necessary, at first, to survey and study the primary sources for the period, both those produced by the author and published by the main periodicals linked to the French Communist Party (PCF). The analysis of this material may elucidate how the experience of exile contributed to the inflection of the amadian work embodied in the novel Gabriela, cravo e canela: chronicle of an interior city, published a few years after her return to Brazil. Thus, the study of French sources relating to the period of exile may open the way to understanding this new moment in the author's novel production, almost always regarded as a conformist and resigned in relation to the political convictions formalized by his previous works.
