Abstract

Background and rationale: The research project related to the Ph.D. scholarship aims to analyze adherence to the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population (DGBP), which is underpinned by a food classification based on the extension and purpose of food processing (NOVA). The International Food Policy Study (IFPS), situated in Canada, aims to study the implementation and impact of public health food and nutrition policies in six countries. The IFPS survey includes a measure based on the NOVA system to assess food and nutrition knowledge (FoodProK). The present project presents a proposal of a 12-months internship in Canada, within the research team which coordinates the IFPS, supervised by Professor David Hammond. Objectives: 1) to analyze the association between level of food and nutrition knowledge and the adherence to the DGBP; and, 2) to analyze the association between level of food and nutrition knowledge and food intake according to NOVA food groups in Brazil and Canada. Methods: Study 1 - 2140-respondents were recruited from the NutriNet-Brazil cohort study. These subjects answered a scale based on DGBP and will answer a Brazilian version of the FoodProK. Study 2 - Data from the study 1 sample will be used for the Brazilian group, whereas data from the 2020 wave of the IFPS will be used for the Canadian sample. Food and nutrition knowledge will be measured through the FoodProK. Food intake was measured through electronic 24h-recall in both countries, and all food items will be classified according to NOVA. In both studies, crude and adjusted regression models will be applied. (AU)
