Abstract

The increase in waste generation combined with the need for environmentally adequate disposal has become the focus of public administrations in all spheres. Municipal solid waste (MSW) is composed of several heterogeneous materials that have high energy content and can be used as raw material for energy generation. The energy recovery of MSW can be carried out from biochemical processes, such as anaerobic digestion, and thermochemical processes, such as gasification and pyrolysis, which can produce solid, liquid and gaseous fuels with high energy potential. Several studies have been carried out in the country to find, according to regional characteristics, the most appropriate treatment with the possibility of energy use (waste-to-energy). In order to proceed with the studies initiated in the projects carried out in the municipality of Santo André (2015-2016) and Itaquaquecetuba (2018), the post-doctoral fellowship holder will develop, within a broad and interdisciplinary project, methods for data grouping and sample composition of MSW, in order to reduce the amount of physical (gravimetric) and chemical (laboratory) analyzes without losing statistical representation, collaborating in the development of a methodology that is one of the main objectives of the project in which this proposal is included. In addition, it will be the responsibility of the PD fellowship holder to develop new prediction models for the energy use of MSW and perform all statistical analysis of the overall project. It is expected to present as a result of this project a methodology to reduce the amount of samples to be analyzed as well as assist in decision making on the implementation of urban solid waste treatment systems, aiming its energy recovery.
