Abstract

The project aims to develop a reflection about the development of representation in party democracies, in an attempt to analyze different institutional contexts and to evaluate their capacity to produce choices by citizens. There will be two orientations for the research that interconnect formal political institutions and the behavior of individuals: the first will be the institutional contextual, which will improve the knowledge of the mechanisms and institutions that seem more conducive to the necessary accountability for democracy. It will be a matter of knowing and evaluating the effects of specific electoral systems, their operating mechanisms and established rules, as well as knowing the party systems, their organizational rules, the volume and nature of the alternatives that organize interests and present themselves in elections. The second orientation will be the electoral behavior at individual level, through survey data, in order to assess the extent to which institutional conditions observed in specific countries affect behavior, promote incentives, either strengthening or weakening the relationship of individuals with the correlates of political choice in those contexts. This reflection will be of core importance to the research core of the project.
