Abstract

There is evidence that the oxygen uptake (VO2) slow component (VO2sc) measured during constant-work rate power output within the heavy and severe intensity domains seem to increase according to an augmented "metabolic instability" generated within the active skeletal muscles compared to moderate intensity exercise. The metabolic alterations inside active skeletal muscles generated by greater intensities of exercise could alter the magnitude of the VO2sc and the functional VO2 gain (VO2/power output ratio; an increase value indicates a muscle inefficiency). Therefore, the current research proposal aims to investigate different exercise protocols (ramp incremental effort and short high-intensity effort) inducing different skeletal muscle metabolic responses (aiming to induce a "metabolic instability") performed prior a 16-min constant-work rate exercise within the heavy and severe intensity domains. To assess the skeletal muscle metabolic responses (aiming to induce a "metabolic instability"), muscle electromyographic signal, blood lactate concentration, deoxyhemoglobin, oxyhemoglobin, muscle oxygen saturation and total hemoglobin signals by near-infrared spectroscopy will be measured.
