Abstract

The ecological plaque hypothesis reports the concept that any change in the environment induces a response in the microbiota. Therefore, to prevent PE recurrence, it is important that factors responsible for these changes are treated. With the effect of stimulating the growth of beneficial microorganisms and their mechanisms, prebiotics can bring about positive changes in the oral microbiota, increasing the resistance to symbiosis and helping in the recovery of health. The concept of prebiotic has only recently been introduced in the field of oral health. It is essential to carry out additional studies to assess the effects of prebiotics in periodontal diseases, as a way to help maintain and enhance the benefits provided by the commensal microbiota. The purpose of this study will be to evaluate potential effects of the prebiotic agent polydextrose on the progression and development of experimental periodontitis in rats. 44 male Wistar rats will be used. They will be randomly divided into 4 groups: control group (C), animals without induction of experimental periodontitis and that will not receive prebiotic administration (n = 11); PE group, animals with periodontitis induction and that will not receive prebiotic administration (n = 11); 3) PREB - animals without periodontitis induction and that will receive the administration of prebiotic (n = 11); and 4) PE / PREB - animals with periodontitis induction and that will receive prebiotic administration (n = 11). In the PREB and PE/PREB groups, 10 g/day of polydextrose will be added directly to the animals' drinking water, on day -30 and until the end of the experiment. In the PE and PE/PREB groups, a cotton ligature will be placed around the first right and left mandibular molars of each animal, for 14 days. All animals will be euthanized on day 14 of the experiment. Analyze of the microtomographic profile will be performed. Data will bestatistically analyzed (p < 0.05).(AU)
