Abstract

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been widely used in science, technology, and health. In the biomedical field, the special physicochemical properties of AuNPs allow the development of innovative approaches for the treatment and diagnosis of serious diseases. When introduced into the blood, AuNPs immediately interact with components of the blood milieu, including the enzymes, cofactors, and inhibitors of the coagulation cascade. These interactions can alter the normal blood hemostasis, for example by activating blood clotting which can lead to unwanted and potentially fatal thrombosis. On the other hand, AuNPs and other nanomaterials have diverse and interesting applications in the area of coagulation. Promising applications of nanomaterials include their use in the treatment of thrombosis (assisting in the dissolution of clots) and hemorrhagic trauma (promoting clotting and stopping bleeding ). In this context, the present project aims to evaluate the influence of AuNPs on the blood clotting system. For this, AuNPs with different surface chemistries will be prepared and their impact on plasma coagulation tested using a series of in vitro assays. The results will allow us to better understand the influence of different AuNPs on the coagulation cascade, as well as to discover promising AuNP models for future applications. (AU)
